designing an AI grading platform

about the company

Graide is an innovative EdTech startup that aims to revolutionise the way universities provide and assess student assignments. Its innovative technology has the potential to transform the way universities grade assignments, enabling educators to focus on more valuable tasks.

The software is the first of its kind for educators to automate the grading process using AI technology, which delivers feedback directly to students. By automating the grading process, Graide is helping to create a more efficient and effective learning environment for students and educators alike.

my role

UX/UI designer

challenge

To bring their groundbreaking concept to life with its first designs, Graide needed a platform that could connect teachers, markers, and students to assignments with its AI-powered assessment system. It would allow educators to create, edit, and manage courses, modules, and assignments, connect assignments to courses and modules, and display feedback to students. The platform needed to provide a visual feedback tool for teachers and students to track progress and identify areas for improvement.

goal

To create the platform's first designs for a seamless user experience across desktop and iOS/Android.
early wireframe

design process

I began the process from the bottom up by mapping out the user relationships. This involved conducting interviews with key stakeholders to get a better understanding of the user needs and desires. By doing so, I was able to gain valuable insights into the user stories created by the team, which enabled me to create flows and a subsequent prototype. Throughout the process, I continued to gather feedback and make adjustments as needed, ensuring that the final product was not only functional but intuitive and better reflecting the users’ expectations.

user mapping

This involved mapping the complex relationships between four user types: teachers, markers, students, and administrators. I needed to understand these relationships before I could map out intuitive journeys across all user types creating, editing, and managing assignments.

user stories and flows

In order to better understand the needs of each type of user, I was provided with detailed user stories that outlined their respective goals. Using these as a foundation, I was able to create skeleton user flows which allowed me to identify key touch points.

wireframes and feedback

Once I had a clear idea of the user journey, I began to build basic wireframes that visualised these touch points. I regularly provided demos of design iterations to stakeholders for feedback, which allowed me to refine the user experience and create a more comprehensive product.

final designs

Once the team was satisfied with all the presented flows, I defined colour and typeface styles, along with reusable components that would be featured throughout the platform.

post-launch

Since its launch, the platform is used by over seven universities and education platforms in the UK. Teachers, students and markers alike have praised the platform for its usability.
“Graide is an excellent platform for reducing marking workload for University staff. This is achieved through GUI’s ease of use and its intuitive nature."
